One of my herbal teachers once said to me “you know, life is stress and adaptation – this is true for all living things.” Meanwhile, Octavia Butler wrote that “the only constant truth is change”. It’s true. Luckily, adaptation is one of humankind’s greatest skills. I don’t see a “good” life as one where nothing big or scary ever happens, but rather, one where life has full permission to unfold in all its chaotic messiness – yet we have the skills to adapt, to partner with change, to ride life’s challenges with a little more grace.
I still live with chronic pain – I have a spinal injury that will likely never heal. But I am no longer anxious or depressed, nor taking daily painkillers or strong anodyne herbs. Through breath and movement I am able to manage and even release somatic tension and stress. Consistent, intentional breathwork gives me a direct line to body, mind and soul, helping me to notice what’s going on inside me, and care for myself gently and effectively. I originally trained in breathwork to have a somatic offering to support my herbalism – now, it is my focus, with my beloved herbs playing the supporting role.
More about me? I’m an artist, poet, dancer, clown, and occasional performer. I teach dance with wonderful clowning school. I’m a convert to the church of dog, joyfully obsessed with my pup Dora, and our fascinating interspecies relationship. I’m a massive dyke and use she/her pronouns. I make weird dolls. And for the past 12 years I have been the proud owner of Little Red Tarot, an online shop selling self-published and hard-to-find find tarot and oracle decks.
